If you work with EDI, if you are an EDI educator, or if you are an implementer of EDI technology, then you are going to love Liaison Technologies’ EDI Notepad. And you wouldn’t be the only one – you see, tens of thousands of EDI pros around the world use EDI Notepad for it is an incredibly useful tool for viewing and editing EDI files.

Several EDI Notepad editions are available: the free EDI Notepad Express Edition, the paid EDI Notepad Professional Edition, and the paid Productivity Suite that includes the EDI Dictionary Viewer. A chart that details the differences between the EDI Notepad editions is available here.

I brought this up because the setup wizard will ask you to choose between EDI Notepad Express and EDI Notepad Professional. Download the EDI Notepad installer, run it, and a setup wizard will show up and guide you through the installation process. At one point, the setup wizard will have you pick between the free EDI Notepad Express and the paid EDI Notepad Professional Edition.

EDI Notepad has a tabbed interface – tabs for all the EDI documents you open are presented at the top, in the upper left hand corner. By default, EDI Notepad opens a Welcome tab that presents your recently accessed EDI documents, allows you to open existing EDI files, allows you to create new EDI files, and more. Above these tabs there are a traditional File Menu and a toolbar with buttons for various functions: create a new EDI file, open an EDI file, edit, view errors, find, and more.

By using the free EDI Notepad Express Edition you have access to the following features: EDI rendering (HTML, XML, Text, Hex); EDI syntax validation; EDI editing (ASC X12, UN/EDIFACT, TRADACOMS, HL7); SMTP support; functional acknowledgement generation; SmartTotal function that enables auto-total inside EDI Notepad using macros.

EDI Notepad nicely blends together ease of use and useful functionality – view and edit EDI files. That’s why it is used by lots of EDI professionals all over the world.

Pros

Several EDI Notepad editions are available: Express, Professional, Productivity Suite. During the installation process you can choose if you want to use the Express or the Professional Edition. EDI Notepad has a tabbed interface that is very easy to use. View and edit EDI files with EDI Notepad.

Cons

None that I could think of.
